- 生命是什么？生命系统（Living systems）不同与无生命的物理系统（physical systems）。具有生命的生物体需要进食获取维持内部稳态的能量；
生命系统的另一个自我维持的特性是适应行为（adaptive behavior）。通过适应行为，生物体（living organisms）可以提高获取能量的能力
（例如发明各种工具，改进种子等等），还可以帮助其产生成功的后代，使其血统（lineage）在自然进化（natural selection）过程中留存。
繁殖是所有动物的终极目标（Darwin, 2004），而且是物理系统所不具备的特性。
